I fell hard for Pedro Paramo. Definitely not traditional easy-to-follow narrative, very trippy, so you just go with it. It’s like Roberto Bolano on a micro dose of acid. The Pisti novel sounds great—very cool how you find these gems. Thank you for livening up Sunday morning.

Thanks for the kind word, Brian! Glad you enjoyed Pedro Paramo. You definitely need to be in the right headspace for a book like that. I wonder if I had read it in a different setting, neither on the go nor in a rush upon the return, I would have enjoyed it more. Still very glad to have read it!

I’ve heard that Pedro Paramo is full of magical realism GOODNESS so I’ll definitely be adding it onto my summer reading list. Thank you for the fantastic list!

Only BoG can bring us a vision of Florida man as literary guerilla toiling in quiet obscurity at the Tampa airport.

Laughing at how you view summer as the time for short books, whereas I view it as the time to tackle the big books I’m scared of! But I am here for short book summer. Always.

Pedro Paramo is ON the TBR heavily - I think I’m going to order it in my next order. Super excited - glad you loved it. I loved the review! Also glad you enjoyed ‘The Employees’ - it’s been over a year since I read and I think I might go back for another flick through! So fleeting but so impactful. I’m looking forward to the new weekly schedule - I hope it works for the newsletter 🤞

The great thing is that it can be short book summer or big book summer or short book winter or mid-sized book spring and all of it is correct! I hope you enjoy Pedro Páramo, and the extra BoG material coming soon. Fingers crossed for sure!

I am feeling both of these short book/big book energies. This month, I'm going for the longer hard books, interpresed with short and highly compelling ones to cleanse the palate between.

I like this plan, Abra! What are you staring with?

I just finished Liliana’s Invincible Summer, and read The English Understand Wool to create a breather (post up today). I have a lot of heavy non-fiction lined up— Knife and Country of the Blind going now, re-reading a short book of sentences and pictures by a friend (also mentioned in that post) as I go.

I had the same experience with 'Pedro Páramo'. Funny! I like the New Directions cover of The Employee. I got this one: https://www.lollieditions.com/books/the-employees

Ooh! I really like that design. Both are really good. Maybe I like them both equally?? Pedro Páramo is definitely a challenge. Maybe I'll revisit it, actually. It all depends on how the TBR shapes up! Thanks, Sharif!

ooo Pisti sounds like just the kind of book I love where I get to ease drop on intellectual conversations and pseudo-attend salons

You read so deeply!!! These are short books, but so intense!! I have read and loved your upcoming read. Right now, my life is intense, mostly all good and I just finished Small Mercies which was so violent. Read it for my book club, or I would have skipped. Moving onto a nonsense, light fiction. And then longer books. My favorite summer reads are really long, which I lug around for days or weeks. Thank you for your 3 choices this week!!

I just looked at Small Mercies and it seems really intense! Glad you're through that and onto something lighter. Martha mentioned earlier that she also prefers big books in the summer time. Big books, small books, whatever you feel like reading is the right answer!

My rating: No Idea might be my favorite of all time lol for some reason the cover of the Hoy one had me thinking it was old timey but this sounds incredibly intriguing!

Lol! Natalie, I almost didn't go with that GIF, but it was too perfect to pass up. The black and white seashells does give it an olden times vibe, for sure. But definitely concerned with modern issues!
