Great review Mike! True Grit sounds great - I love it when a book cleanses the palate AND thoroughly grips you. A match made in heaven. I always find thrillers/true crime are the best palate cleansers.
Thank you for such a fine review. Portis had a much deserved moment earlier this year with the publication of hid collected works, fiction and nonfiction.
Great review as usual, Mike. Putting this on hold immediately to bring along as I visit my in-laws 500 miles away for Thanksgiving -- seems like a book that can take you out of yourself, at least for a little while. (I had no idea it was so old!)
Thanks, Kate! The most recent movie tracks pretty closely to the book. In fact, I can't think of a more faithful adaptation. I've never seen the John Wayne version. Not sure I'll get to it. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too!
The general idea of this book is not usually something I would chose for myself but you make it sound damn enticing! Also did not pay attention to the 2010 Cohen brothers movie version but I really should have. A++ gifs this week too !
Unfortunately, I have that The Haunting of Hill House edition with Netflix sticker 😂 I hate movie tie-ins too but that was the only copy I could find 😂
I just read True Grit this summer. It’s the perfect novel.
Thanks, Joel! Glad you liked the book, too!

Thanks, Martha! You're right, a novel like this is a rare and special find for when you've got a book hangover.

Thanks, Brian! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks, Sarah! I'd say it's nearly an ideal book for this situation. Let me know what you think! Happy Thanksgiving!
You too! 🧡
I loved this book. I have never watched the movie, but I think I will. Thanks for your great review and Happy Thanksgiving to you and Donna!!

There is the John Wayne version and the later Cohn Brothers/Jeff Bridges version, which I thought was better.
Thanks! I’ll look for the Cohn Brothers version.

Thanks, Natalie! It’s definitely worth checking out, both in book and film form.

Totally understandable, Jam! I might eventually break down and get it myself if I can't find a used copy somewhere first. Enjoy!
I’ve actually never read this one! Now I want to!!!
I hope you read and enjoy it as much as I did!
