I rarely DNF a book. The last one was 'The Shadow King' earlier this year. The only other time was 'The Secret Life of Plants' two years ago. A horrendous book that I had such high hopes for!

I was supposed to read Master and Margarita in college and I never did, and have felt guilty about it, so I’m glad to get the lowdown in this review. Thanks BoG.

I did that with Ethan Frome in high school. One day I hope to get to it, and I hope you’ll get to this so we can discuss it!

The Master and Margarita is one of my favorite books. I'm a giant Russian history/lit nerd, and it's just such a fascinating example of literature as criticism of the state.

Yes! I agree. It shows that criticism can be equally biting and funny! You rarely see that done so well.

I was reading The Master and Margarita at an upstate ski mountain while my kids were taking lessons (it was too cold for me to ski:)). A man approached me and told me he met his wife when she was reading it and they subsequently fell in love an married, partly based on their mutual love of the book. I liked it and we had a good book club meeting about it, but I was always surprised that this was a book that drew a couple to each other.

Excellent review! And I loved the cats!!

Thanks, Kate! That's such a great story! Thanks for sharing it. You're right: This is a surprising book for a love connection. But I guess that could show they were meant for each other?
