I read Jaggy's "the Water Statues" earlier this year andI couldn't make head nor tail of it to be honest. I know this one here is more famous and maybe more accessible. Love everything Lispector writes, so looking forward to reading your review
Thanks, Marc! I hope you do give this book a try. It feels spiritually aligned with Lispector, particularly Near to the Wild Heart, but told in a more straightforward way. I struggle with Lispector, but I keep pushing myself to read her because with the challenge comes access to beauty and profound insight. I look forward to reading The Water Statues, but I need to find it first lol!
Have you read "The Passion According to G.H."? It is one of the most intense reading experiences I have ever had. Not sure I grasped all of it, but a stunning, stunning book.
Did you see this piece about the evolution of that irresistible Sweet Days of Discipline cover? https://lithub.com/the-perils-of-designing-a-cover-for-a-novel-you-truly-love/ I read it a while back and thought, I need to get that book! And then forgot until now--thanks so much for the reminder and the added incentive to read. How particularly nice that it's so short and sweet!
I read sweet days after reading that article too! Brilliant. I read a few of her collections too, and water statues, but didn't connect to the as much. The ending of sweet days is so true and haunting
Thanks, Naomi! Glad you had the same reaction to the NYRB article. It’s so good! Sorry Fleur’s other work didn’t connect. Others have said that, too. But I expect l’ll plow through anyway!

I just finished Boulder last night, so I’m excited to read your thoughts about it!
Thanks, Aleesha! I started it yesterday and am enjoying it so far. Galloping through it! I'm loving my short-book summer!
Excellent review! May or may not pick this up. Right now, I need happier, sunnier stories.
Thanks, Kate! Once the fall comes around I think you should check this book out. I think you'd like it.

Yes! I read it a few years back. I agree 100 percent. Intense and stunning!
