Oh I loved this review Mike! I have not heard of Nightwood before but I am v intrigued! I laughed at you keeping the book despite Donna having a copy - it’s important to keep the books we love like prized possessions!
Super intrigued about you reading ‘The Employees’ soon. I read it last year - it’s so weird, but thought provoking at parts too. And thank you for another reminder to get round to reading ‘Boulder’ soon.
Thanks, Martha! I hope you give Nightwood a try. I’m hoping to read The Employee soon, probably over the summer. For a second I thought I’d have to give up my copy of Nightwood once I saw Donna had it, since space on the shelf is at a premium. But then I thought, no way am I parting with this book!
Ive read and listened to a book to progress through it faster and I’ve also listened while reading (bc I like the narration style but also want to pay attention to the writing) but I haven’t heard of listening and reading the whole thing through twice/separately for better comprehension. I like that idea and definitely could see doing that!
Thanks, Renee! I can't stress enough how much the audiobook helped me. I got so much more out of Nightwood with it than if I had just stuck to the text. I forgot to mention in the review that it was the first time I've listened to an audiobook in ages. The last time, if I remember correctly, was on a roadtrip from Boston to Cincinnati during college where we got some Clive Cussler books on tape to pass the time. Books on tape, the spiritual inspiration for Books on GIF lol!
I definitely have a copy- I started reading it years ago but never finished it (I read multiple books at once), I think I heard about it on a list of queer books or something. I am glad that it is challenging to get through, because it feels like that is less of a me issue but now I definitely want to give it another go. I am going to try to unearth my copy and give it another go. Reading the opening passage again, it did start coming back to me again.
Thanks, Leigh! I hope I didn’t make it sound too scary! It’s really a good book and worth the effort, I think. I was unfamiliar with the Rhys book, but I just looked it up and saw a blurb about how it fell into obscurity before a radio adaptation gave it new life. So also similar to Nightwood in that they are books that benefit from being heard as well as seen.
Loved reading how this came on your radar! I've never heard of this at all but after your review and so many people's endorsements, it looks like a must!

I hope you give it another try and that you enjoy it! Let me know how it goes.
I’ll admit I’m scared of this book! Your review made me think it does sound a little like Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys

I read Nightwood in college and even at that questionable age I remember loving it. Wonderful review you always make me chuckle
Thanks, Natalie! I'm glad to hear that!

Thanks, Cassie! I hope you check it out and enjoy it!
