Wowwww I'm sold. Perfect timing too with the NYRB sale currently going on. I already placed an order on Friday, but might need to place another now to add this one :))))))))
I am ordering up this book right now. And Dog of the South—I love that book, although Portis’ first novel, Norwood, remains my favorite, so far. Bought his collected works—fiction and no -fiction—and his last novel, Atlantis, is on my TBR list. If I had to pick a desert island writer—one writer only but you can have all his or her work—I think Portis would come in right behind Bolano and Dickens.
Thanks, Brian! My entry point to Portis was True Grit, which I loved. When I reviewed it, several folks recommended Dog of the South. I just found it and read a few pages and now I’m locked in.
Omg! I’m so sold! This book sounds incredible! I watched an art restoration show the other day and equally felt compelled to change career. Great minds Mike! Perhaps we shall embark on this new career together.
Great great great review I loved this! The writing AND the gif choices! 10/10. I look forward to reading this as soon as I can!
I am so serious about becoming an art restorer, Martha. This book makes it sound like a glorious job. Just having a project that totally absorbs you, mind and skill. No emails, no meetings, no memos. Just art. Joy.
I have yet to read an NYRB Classic that hasn't stunned me, in the best way. I usually avoid books about war-related PTSD -- it just hits too close to home for me -- but I'll be picking this one up ASAP.
Have been meaning to read this for ages. Thanks to you, I'm pulling it off my shelf for this week!

The NYRB just doesn’t miss! I hope you enjoy the book, Sarah!
This is one of my favorite novels. So evocative of setting and so moving.
Thanks, Susan! I’m glad to find that so many people like this novel!
